Outreach

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”     –Matthew 28:18-20

First Lutheran Church takes seriously its call to care for the poor, sick, suffering, and afflicted out of our love for God and for our neighbor.  As a part of that call, we are involved in several different ministries that help out the citizens of Muskegon.  If you would like to be involved in any of these ministries, please contact the church office.

Food Pantry

Food PantryWe operate a Food Pantry at First Lutheran to provide food for families who may need some additional help.  Our members donate food, organize the shelves, and prepare food bags for distribution based on family size.  Some of our help for the pantry comes from the ministry of Love, inc.

Any assistance from our food pantry is free of charge, but we do ask that you call our church office to schedule a time to pick up food from our pantry.  Please also contact the church office if you would like to donate food or work in the pantry.

Family Promise

Family PromiseFirst Lutheran Church is one of several participating churches in the Family Promise organization of Muskegon.  Family Promise is an organization that provides housing, meals, and job assistance for families who are homeless. Families must complete a screening interview for admission to the program, but are encouraged to contact Executive Director Destinee Keener, for more information.  (231) 747-8855

Families in the program spend one week at a time in different churches throughout the year.  First Lutheran hosts families in our church several weeks throughout the year.  Volunteers from the church cook dinner, spend time visiting with families, and stay overnight with families at the church.  In addition, other volunteers cook breakfast and provide transportation to the Family Promise Day Center.  If you would like to volunteer with Family Promise at First Lutheran, please contact the church office for more information.

Supper House

Supper HouseSupper House is a program run by MAP (Mission for Area People) that serves dinner Monday – Friday to members of the Muskegon community that need a hot meal.  First Lutheran is responsible for cooking and serving the meal on the 2nd Thursday of every month.  Several volunteers get together to cook various parts of the meal (including dessert) and then others, including some of our youth, come to help serve the meal to the community.  Meals are served at Temple United Methodist Church in Muskegon Heights.

If you are interested in volunteering with us at Supper House, a group of people meet at First Lutheran at  3:30 p.m. to get over to Supper House at 4:00 p.m.  Please contact the church office for more information about Supper House.

In addition to our regular work above, First Lutheran Church is active in hosting blood drives with the American Red Cross, helping with gleaning projects around town, offering our parking lot for food truck deliveries, school backpack and Christmas adopt-a-family drives through the Northside Churches, raising money and promoting hunger awareness in the CROP Walk, providing quilts and other items for Lutheran World Relief, and we participate in The Ride through Mercy Health Partners.

For more information on any of the events listed on this page, please contact the church office.
